When working in the wellbeing space, a common question arises: “How do I achieve work-life balance?” It’s a valid inquiry, deserving of thoughtful exploration.

The Nature of Work-Life Balance

Improving time management, focusing energy on what truly matters, and accepting that you can’t do everything are all solid strategies. But these are actions; what we truly need is awareness.

From the moment we’re born, we’re given two gifts: time and energy. Initially, we depend on our parents to guide our time while we learn to control our energy. As we enter school, a structured system begins to dictate our time and energy.

Fast forward to the workplace, and we find that our employers largely control both. The rhythm of our workday—clocking in, meetings, deadlines—dictates our time, while tasks and responsibilities shape our energy. Outside of work, family obligations and social events further pull us in different directions.

The Real Question: How Do We Create a Balanced Life?

Instead of fixating on the elusive concept of work-life balance, we should ask ourselves: How do we create a balanced life? True balance comes when we feel comfortable with the allocation of our time and energy, regardless of who controls them.

Lessons from Kelly Slater: Presence is Key

Enter Kelly Slater, the original GOAT of surfing. At 50, he made a stunning return to the Pipeline World Professional Surfing competition. Against younger competitors, he demonstrated remarkable skill, making it to the final and ultimately clinching the crown on his last wave.

When asked about his mindset during those intense final moments, Kelly replied, “I was focused on where I was and what I was doing. I was very present.”

This emphasis on presence is crucial. By giving our full attention to the moment, we can cultivate a sense of balance in our lives. It’s about directing 100% of our time and energy to where we are and who we’re with.

The Power of Now

“Where my feet are, so is my head.” This sentiment captures the essence of balanced living. Being distracted by thoughts like “How do I achieve work-life balance?” leads us down a path of frustration. Instead, we should strive for awareness in the present moment.

Are you showing up fully present every time? This is where balance begins.

Conclusion

Finding harmony in our lives doesn’t come from external conditions but from our internal awareness. By embracing presence, as Kelly Slater exemplifies, we can navigate the complexities of time and energy with grace.
