What is Your School Culture?

“Culture - the ideas, customs, and social behaviour of a particular people or society.” Google

I dare say I could have dug deeper to find a plethora of definitions and opinions on culture. And those definitions would not be a fit for every organisation.

The culture of a school influences the performance outcomes of not the just the students, but the community. Hence why the definition of your school culture should be a statement or a vision that can be easily articulated.

Here is the simplest test of your whether you have the school culture you aspire to.

Picture a social gathering attended by one of your staff.

They get into a conversation.

The default question is asked,

“So, what do you do?”

“I am a teacher.”

“What school are you at?”

“XYZ school.”

And her comes the kicker,

“And what is it like to teach at XYZ school?”

There will be two paths of response – negative or positive, depending on the culture of the school.

As school leaders, what is the response you would like every associated person to say to the question, “What is XYZ School like?”

If you are hoping it will be positive, then you are lacking a Positive School Culture framework to ensure the answer is in the positive. Hope is not a strategy.

What is your school culture?
